BGS Associate Programme Series: Variety, Responsibility and Senior Leadership

“Why I would recommend the BGS Associate Programme to anyone who really wants to stretch themselves in a varied graduate role…”

If you’d asked me two years ago I would never have imagined I could learn so much within such a short amount of time – especially given I had no previous commercial experience. I’ve now been a part of the BGS Programme for almost two years and I cannot believe how fast time has gone by. It has been a great experience – fun, challenging and stretching.

So what is it about the BGS programme that has made it a fun, challenging and stretching experience?

During the first six months I was working with four different teams covering everything from analytics to raising finance for SMEs, to managing affiliate partnerships. Working for various teams allowed me to develop skills in different areas very quickly and provided me with a better understanding of what was going on within Business Growth Services. Furthermore, I was also responsible for a client project together with two of my peers, from which I gained valuable client experience. Finally, the BGS Programme has a diverse, tailored learning and development programme that has enabled me to improve my skills in everything from coaching to excel.

Something that makes this programme different from many other graduate programs, is that you are given real responsibility in the early stages of the programme. Being able to take full ownership of different tasks and projects (having access to support when needed) allowed me to stretch myself and pushed me out of my comfort zone – in a good way of course.

Within our department, the structure is less hierarchal than in many other companies. I’ve had exposure to very senior people from the beginning of the programme. You’re not only shadowing but actually working with the senior leaders and being exposed to their thinking and seeing how they work on a day to day basis, is a great way to learn and adapt your own thinking and leadership style.

These are just a few of the reasons I’d recommend the programme to anyone who really wants to stretch themselves in a varied graduate role. It is a great opportunity to rapidly develop and is enabling participants to develop the skills required to become successful business people in the future.
