The Importance of Being Resilient
We all know what it is like to ‘fail’ at something… one way or another.
Firstly… let me share with you just three examples of very successful individuals who understand ‘The Importance of Being Resilient’
R. H. Macy: Most people are familiar with this large department store chain, but Macy did not always have it easy. Macy started seven failed business before finally hitting big with his store in New York City.
Walt Disney: Today, Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. A newspaper editor fired him because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, Disney started a number of businesses that did not last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.
Last but not least, my personal favourite…
Michael Jordan: Most people would not believe that a man often lauded as the best basketball player of all time was actually cut from his high school basketball team. Luckily, Jordan didn’t let this setback stop him from playing the game and he has stated, “I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions, “I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed”. “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed”.
From a more personal standpoint, working and studying for my AAT qualification has proven to be a challenge and like the entrepreneurs highlighted above, I too hit an obstacle with my first attempt at an AAT exam, where the outcome was not as expected. However, this is where I learnt that ‘failure is an event and not a person’ and that it did not define me. Instead, I managed to pick myself back up and try again. I have now passed all of my exams so far and only have two left! I guess the point I am trying to make is this… there will be times where things will get difficult in terms of exams and the day-to-day grind, but during these times, resilience is key.
Some of the biggest names we all know today will tell you that to get where they are, it has been a journey filled with many difficulties but one thing they all have in common is the capacity to recover quickly from the troubles they have faced – Resilience.
