A day in the life of a GIA associate!

POP QUIZ: Which of the below projects has the Transport & International team (T&I) not worked on? 

  1. Provision of financial and commercial advice on the West Coast Partnership including the mobilisation of HS2 services for the DfT;
  2. Procurement of the train operator and facilities management for Qatar Rail;
  3. Development of the Outline Business Case and Value for Money Assessment for Translink’s Belfast Hub project; and
  4. Financial structuring of the futuristic Hyperloop Train.

The T&I team sits in the Government and Infrastructure Advisory (GIA) department which comprises of sector teams including Transport, Real estate, Health, Energy & Environment and Financial Modelling. T&I work on national and international complex projects in the transport and infrastructure sectors and focus on providing financial and commercial advice on franchises and concession contracts for both public and private sector clients. Typical T&I clients include transport authorities, local and central governments, and transport companies.

We work closely with all teams in GIA as well as the wider firm through which it is possible to gain experience across sectors. In my role as Executive, I have worked on various projects ranging from providing commercial advice to the DfT on the West Coast Partnership, was part of the evaluator team for the procurement of new trains for the Dockland’s Light Railway in London, and developed the Outline Business Case for the Belfast Hub which is a transport-led regeneration project at the heart of Belfast’s transport infrastructure.

A personal highlight was to develop a profit share mechanism. This included an analysis of threshold levels for the Wales & Borders Franchise to advise Transport for Wales on ensuring that the taxpayer benefits from any unexpected large profits achieved by the operator.

Since joining the T&I team, I have developed my commercial as well as technical skills through various learning sessions and on-the-job learning. Various skill sets and experience levels exist in the T&I team and in wider GIA and learning from my team members is probably the source of most of my learning to date. It’s an easy going environment which is emphasized through weekly T&I calls to keep everyone in the team up to date on projects, regular team meetings followed by drinks, team dinners here and there, and last but not least the annual ‘GIA Away Day’ – which this year entailed a day packed with the department’s strategic outlook and fun activities at Kempton Park Racecourse.

And finally, the big reveal – the correct answer to the Pop Quiz is D, but who knows – it could become one of our projects in the future!
