We recently welcomed 417 new colleagues to the firm. One of our largest ever cohorts logged on from their homes, and some of our offices, to find out more about the next stage of their Grant Thornton careers in a two-day induction: Talent21.
As cliché or as predictable as it sounds, finding yourself starting a ‘new chapter’ always arrives with a multitude and variety of emotion. Just 3 weeks after I had sat my last examination at Durham University in Philosophy, I found myself back in my childhood home, starting the first day as an FTC associate in Public Sector Audit here at Grant Thornton.
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we asked some of our new joiners what inspired them to work at Grant Thornton, how they found the Talent20 onboarding process and what their ambitions are to help shape the future of our firm.
I joined Grant Thornton in 2016 as a school leaver straight after Sixth Form. For a while, I’d known that university was not the best option for me – the thought of moving away was daunting and trying to finance a degree was unrealistic. Continuing my education was important to me but earning money and having stability was also a big driver in my decision to get a job.

I joined the firm in February 2020 as a Fixed-Term-Contract (FTC) associate in the Public Sector Audit (PSA) team. The FTC position suited me really well because I was looking for a career change in the beginning of the year, and was weary of having to wait for the September intakes.
Since I work in audit and quite specifically the public sector team the bulk of our work is done face-to-face with our local audit teams and the client. Being based in the South-West I spend most of my year either commuting or travelling and meeting people and working side-by-side is an essential element of the job. Within days it meant the wider team needed to now figure out ‘how to audit remotely’.

Exams - such a small word with such a large amount of fear attached to it. Exams are a big part of your training contract at Grant Thornton and the number of exams you will be required to sit will depend on which qualification you are studying towards and which service line your graduate scheme is in.
