Jackie’s adventures in London. Audit, Run the River and a Live Escape Game #SecondeeTakeover 2

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step – Lao Tzu

I said goodbye to comfort and the familiar, trading them in for the unknown – for new faces in a new city, and unlimited travel possibilities. For the first time in my life, I was going to be living with mystery roommates in a foreign country where I had never been before without an existing community to support me.

To my surprise, the transition was a smooth one and there were more similarities than differences between my life in London and my life in Toronto.

From my experience, I feel that there is a strong sense of community within the Grant Thornton teams – everyone I’ve met – whether in commercial audit, PSA, or tax – has always been friendly and supportive. There has always been a sense of “us” and that is something I love about Grant Thornton as a whole. It helped that I shared the flat with two other secondees who also embodied this mentality; Kelsey Ling from Johannesburg (South Africa) and Grisel Diaz from Miami (United States). These girls were great and I couldn’t have asked for better roommates, travel buddies, and friends. (Great job GT hiring team!)

The memory that stands out to me the most is the Run the River, where participants sign up to run a designated 5k or 10k route around Tower Bridge and along the River Thames. The run transcended being a normal fundraising event to become a department event, with participation at all levels and all of us wearing co-ordinating pink headbands and/or wristbands. I remember signing up for the 5k with very little running experience, and then agreeing to do a park run which was also 5k. This was standard for park runs, but was news to me. Thankfully, I survived. I can now say I’ve completed my first park run and also my first (and most fashionable) 5k.

Sadly, the end of September marks the end of my secondment, six months in this beautiful city that I now consider my home. But don’t worry London, I’ll be back!
