Grizel from Miami on life in London and what makes Grant Thornton special. #SecondeeTakeover.

I was born in Cuba and grew up in the US. I would never have imagined that  20 years down the line I was going to be working in the UK with people from around the world. When I was recruited by Grant Thornton doing a secondment in another country was the topic of choice but a rarity in occurrence. So the moment I heard my colleague had landed a secondment in the UK I immediately started my search.

I chose the UK for its location as it is conveniently located hours away from the rest of Europe as well as its history. From the beginning of my career with Grant Thornton I have worked on private clients but I’ve always wanted to learn more about the public sector so I decided to apply for something outside of my comfort zone and chose a secondment in Public Sector Assurance (PSA).

A nerve-racking interview and a couple of months later I was dropped straight into the whirlwind known as NHS season in London. This was baptism of fire and a very steep learning curve. Looking back I can’t help but smile at all of the wonderful memories I’ve made and everything I’ve learned about the public sector and most importantly myself.

I was fortunate enough to be placed in amazing teams with people that are now not just my colleagues but my friends. From the very beginning everyone was welcoming and willing to help. One of my favourite things about the department is the emphasis they place on the people and the relationships amongst them. Whether it’s sponsoring a football match against other Grant Thornton offices, coordinating end of month drinks or team days at the Velodrome –  even recruiting a large group of people to do a random 10k run, the camaraderie I’ve witnessed here is like no other.

After five months I can whole heartedly say that this is the best decision I’ve ever made, both professionally and personally, and London PSA will forever hold a dear place in my heart.
